My thoughts on Windows Vista....With the fact you get shoddy sound and rubbish graphics at the expense of an increased load on your PC...
I was bored....

I'm still running on '98, it works well enough for me.
Bill Gates is the anti-christ though, does anyone know where I can get hold of Linux on the cheap?

possibly what version are you after?

I created this as a commission for another site:
Enjoy.
Btw, if you're getting it for games... don't. Soundcard drivers are now Microsoft rather than Direct3d etc so you'll be lumbered with shit sound and shit graphics unless you install umpteen patches, or until they sort it in their numerous "(dis)Service Packs".
I'm sticking with XP with the "LongHorn" features patch. All the Joy of advertised Vista without the problems.

Whatever will run on a Pent. III equivalent processor at a reasonable rate, I'm a bit of a luddite so I don't want to have to fuck about with it too much.
Anything to get away from the'Gospel according to Gates'

Well the only people I know who run linux boxes are programmers, so can't say it will be an easy option, although you should be able to run games on a linux box, one of my mates refuses to use MS products, I think he uses an emulator to run WoW on his machine, but I know it wasn't the easiest of options. I also understand now apple have moved over to intel processors it is possible to run the latest version Mac OS on a PC, but how effective or easy it is Idon't know.

If you want to take a look at LINUX, one of the cheaper paid for options can be found here: http://www.linspire.com/.
I'm fairly sure you can also download the LINUX source and compile your own version of the LINUX kernel if you really want to.
LINUX works on a slightly different approach to Gates' lot. If there's no device driver for your hardware in LINUX, Mr Torvalds would appreciate it if you'd write one for him. Rather than Microsoft's here's a crap one that'll crash your system every now and again.

My boss bought a new desktop the other week. It was advertised as having XP on it but when we got to PC world (I came along cos my boss had never used the company credit card so i was a "backup") they told us Microsoft had forced them to change all the machines to Vista.
After getting it home and finding no software worked on it (including his broadband drivers so he couldnt even go looking for patches) he got it wiped and XP put on it.
Thus ends my first experience of Vista.

slightly misleading statement there, but then the store staff realy dont know whats going on half the time.
I work at the national tech support centre for the dixons group, albiet on tvs, and it would be fairer to say that microsoft told the manufacturers to change it. or alternatively, they stopped issueing them with OEM licenses in order to push the new product, which frankly is good business sense.
i'm a wee bit defensive here because i get sick of the general pcworld bashing that i see and hear around me.
and thats just from the staff

Sounds like the only help they want the sales staff to offer is a hand loading your purchases into your car.

PC world...... no comment as im still fumeing from them trying to stiff on a HD they took back as it was incompatible with the board drives on my mother board, even though they said it was universal.

PC World, personally I have never had a bad experience with them, on the most part the employees know they know nothering and will tell you and pass you on to a more experienceed person. But the horror stories I have heard from close friends have put me off using them, apart form the prices being more expensive than the internet, well they are going to be.
Personal experience good, the smell stuff that sticks when flung around not so good. But that is public relations for you.

Lucky you........ in my local pcw you get a prize if you can even find a member of staff (excluding the poor sod on the only check out open) on one occassion I insisted he got the manager out of hiding, when he finally turned up I asked him if they paid shit wages as there are never any staff on the shop floor, to which the reply was " we interview loads of people but none of them are suitable"
Wonder how he got the job

To be fair, PC world let me take a laptop back because it was incompatible with some lab hardware, and even let me bring in said bit of lab hardware and try installing it on display laptops until I found one it liked. They even refunded the price difference eventually.
